Course Description and Objectives
Course Description: This course is a survey of the United States' rise to world power. The course will cover the evolution of the position of the United States within the world community, the historical development of American diplomatic policies, and the relationship of those policies to the political, economic, military, racial, religious, and cultural forces which have shaped American history.
Course Objectives: Students will be able to identify and discuss the major events and forces which have shaped the historical development of American diplomacy and the place of the United States in the world community. They will be able to identify and discuss the major effects which American foreign relations have had on the development of the United States. Students will be able to evaluate critically recent scholarship on diplomatic history and to write critical analyses of foreign policy decisions.
