Support Groups

Overcoming Adversity

We are so happy to hear of your interest in the “Overcoming Adversity” support group. This group is designed to help provide you with the social support networks at Georgetown College and in the community that you may need during your time as an undergraduate.

During the 2007-2008 academic year we will be discussing several general topics such as:

  • adjusting to campus life
  • depressed mood
  • time/stress management
  • peer pressure
  • body image
  • test anxiety
  • drug and alcohol use
  • managing relationships
  • and more.

Getting together to learn about these broad topics is meant to increase your awareness of the possible difficulties that many individuals face while attending college, and to provide you with some available resources for avoiding/overcoming these issues.

You may want to participate by sharing your personal experience with others in the group for peer support or to provide others with encouragement. However, the counselors will not be attempting to resolve anyone’s individual problems during the support group meetings. If you would like to talk in more detail about your personal struggles, we encourage you to come by the Wellness Center or call 7074 to schedule an appointment for individual counseling.

We will meet for one hour on Fridays from 11:00AM-12:00PM. Please come by the Wellness Center with your classmates, friends, and roommates to sign up for the group. We are really looking forward to meeting with you and answering any questions or concerns you may have.

Sincerely,
Christina Weathers, B.A. and Chris Evans, M.S.
