(killed by Beowulf)

The wars between the Swedes and the Geats are an important background to the story of Beowulf.  During the reign of the Geat king Haethcyn, the Swedes invade Geatland. While seeking retribution, Haethcyn is killed by Ongentheow. Haethcyn's brother, Hygelac, avenges Haethcyn by sending Eofor, who kills Ongentheow. After Hygelac's death among the Frisians, Hygelac's son Heardred gets on Onela's bad side by harboring Eanmund and Eadgils, the sons of Ohthere. Onela had usurped Ohthere's throne and wished to destroy Eanmund and Eadgils.  Heardred is then killed by Onela.  Beowulf avenges Heardred's death by killing Onela, but he brings peace by placing Eadgils on the Swedish throne.

It is important to remember that the Swedes are also called the Shylfings. Wiglaf, the only warrior who stands with Beowulf against the dragon, is called "a well-regarded Shylfing warrior."  Given the history of animosity between the Swedes and the Geats, it seems significant in many ways that the only one to stand with Beowulf is a Swede.
