Class meetings will be devoted to close reading of the texts and lectures on the social and cultural context of assigned readings. Special attention will be paid to the critique of Victorianism, the literature of the First World War, and the aesthetics of Modernism.

The Longman Anthology of British Literature,
Volume 2C Course Requirements: Three short (6-7 pages) critical essays (15% each); Quizzes and Reading Notebook (15%); Exam over Units One and Two (15%); Final Exam over Units III and IV (25%) Reading Notebook: Fifteen percent of your grade will be based on a daily writing in a “reading notebook.” Include the following in your notebook: reading notes, answers to reading questions, notes and free writing for the three critical essays (do not include drafts). I will collect your notebooks at midterm and the end of the semester. The notebooks will be evaluated according to the following scale: 60-70 pages: A (30 by midterm) 45-60 pages: B (22 by midterm) 35-45 pages: C (17 by midterm) 25-35 pages: D (12 by midterm) Less than 25 pages: F (less than 12) Attendance: I expect that you will attend class daily. Absence is acceptable only in the case of illness or a legitimate emergency. If you are going to miss class, please email me and tell me why you are to be absent. Each absence in excess of 3 will lower your final grade 3 points. Academic Honesty: Cheating and plagiarism of any sort will not be tolerated in this course. If you cheat on an exam or written work, I will abide by the terms of the Honor Code set forth in your student handbook. Do note that I expect your reading notebooks (see below) to be written independently of outside help and other students in the class. If, in reading over your notebooks, I conclude that you copied the work of another student, or allowed your work to be copied, then I will report you to the Honors Council. |
