How to Major in English

To major, you will need:

  • 33 hours in English above ENG 112, plus
  • 6 hours of allied courses

Of those 33 hours, 9 hours are required of all majors:

  • ENG 211 English Literature Survey I 
  • ENG 213 English Literature Survey II
  • ENG 335 Shakespeare

Distribution Areas

The remaining 21 hours must include at least one class in each of four distribution areas. These four distribution areas are:

  1. American Literature
  2. English Literature before 1700
  3. English Literature 1700-1900
  4. Comparative Literature.

3 Hours of American Literature (Choose at least 1 class)

  • ENG 318 American Literature to 1870 or
  • ENG 320 American Literature from 1870 or
  • ENG 470 Topics in American Literature

3 Hours of English Literature before 1700 (Choose at least 1 class)

  • ENG 305 Milton
  • ENG 325 17th Century Literature
  • ENG 405 Chaucer
  • ENG 435 Medieval Literature
  • ENG 475 Topics in Renaissance Literature

3 Hours of English Literature between 1700-1900 (Choose at least 1 class)

  • ENG 309 Neo-Classical Literature
  • ENG 389 Victorian Literature
  • ENG 339 Romantic Literature
  • ENG 419 English Novel
  • ENG 479 Topics in Nineteenth Century Literature

3 Hours of Comparative Literature (Choose at least 1 class) 

  • ENG 294 Comparative Literature Survey
  • ENG 314 Epic Poetry
  • ENG 324 Twentieth Century Fiction
  • ENG 334 Twentieth Century Poetry
  • ENG 384 Twentieth Century Drama

Allied classes 

In addition to your 33 hours (11 classes) in English, you must take 6 hours (2 classes) in allied disciplines.  These classes cannot both be from the same department.

Select any 2 courses from 2 of the following 5 subjects (for a total of 6 hours). These courses may not also be counted toward general education requirements.

How to Minor in English

It's simple--just take 18 hours (six classes) in the English department (not counting English 111 and 112)
