Freshmen: Make Your Computer “GC-College-Ready”

Below is some quick advice on how to make your computer ready to use at GC before you arrive on campus. Take this advice and you will be "computer ready" from the day you step onto campus!

I.  Recommended Computer Configurations for Georgetown College Students -- compliments of GC's Information Technology Services (ITS) website.

  • Windows computers should be Pentium III or better running at a minimum of 866 Mhz and with at least 128 mb of RAM.

  • Windows 98se or above is the recommended operating system. Other operating systems such as Macintosh or Linux receive very limited support from ITS.

  • Macintosh computers should be G3 class running MacOS 8.x or above, but MacOS 9.x or above is recommended.

  • To connect any computer to the campus network requires an Ethernet card.

  • ITS recommends to have the Ethernet card installed and tested when you purchase your computer.

II.  Student To Student Advice -- compliments of Shea Dickerson, a GC student who has been there, done that!

  • Have your Ethernet card installed before you come to college.  If not, ITS on campus can do it for you, but if you do it before you come, you’ll be ahead of the game!  Most computer stores will install it for you when you buy the card there.

  • Buy your Ethernet cable before you come to college.  The longer the cable is, (14’-25’ are the best) the better!  You never know where your computer will be in your dorm room, and this cable is a hot item at the beginning of school.

  • When looking to purchase a computer for college, ask the sales person if the items on this page are included in the computer.  Most of them should be, but if not, it would be worth the extra $5-$10 to upgrade them.  Be sure to ask about the Ethernet card, and although most computers come standard with it, it's better to ask just in case.

  • Depending on how much you use your computer will depend on how many programs you will need on it. Students can purchase the Microsoft Office CD from The College Store for less than $15 dollars. With this CD you can install Microsoft software. It is well worth the money to buy the CD at the College Store because the package deal at any other computer store can cost you up to $400!

  • Be patient with ITS, they do an excellent job!  They will be there to help you, but they often get very busy with the incoming freshmen.

  • The best thing to do is follow this advice, and you won’t have to worry about configuring your computer when you get here in the fall!

If you need more information about computers at GC, call ITS at 502-863-7006.
