Tutoring and Support Services

 

Listed below in alphabetical order are some of the tutoring/support services available to all Georgetown College students.

  • Academic Tutoring Services Program: Peer tutors are available in a variety of subjects. Request a tutor on-line, visit the second floor of Giddings Hall, or call 502-863-8038 for more information. Tutoring is free.
  • Baldridge Reading and Study Skills Program:
    This one-week program is offered in the fall semester only and helps students increase their reading speed and comprehension and improves study skills.  Last year's participants at GC increased their reading rate 89%. There is a fee for the course.
  • Center for Calling and Career:  This office offers assistance in career exploration, career development, and career placement through one-on-one career counseling. Also, the office helps students with resume writing and graduate school applications, gives tips on networking, and sets up mock job interviews.  Call 502-863-8346 for details.
  • Classroom Instructors: Some of the best academic support comes directly from the classroom instructor. Students should feel comfortable approaching the course instructors to ask for help, and Georgetown College instructors view positively those who seek assistance.\
  • Computer Help: For questions about computer services on campus, e-mail service, or assistance with computer issues, call the HELP desk (on-campus extension is 4357).
  • Counseling Center and Accommodations Testing: The Counseling Center works individually with students on issues that affect academic success.   Also, the Center will do limited personality and learning assessment or make referrals to local resources. In order to receive accommodations, learning disability documentation must be on file at the Counseling Center. For more information, call 502-863-7074.
  • Ensor Learning Resource Center: Not only does the LRC create the perfect atmosphere conducive for quiet reflection, but it also provides facilities for student research and study. The LRC has numerous computer workstations with access to the World Wide Web, an online public access catalog, CD-ROM periodical indexes, over 142,000 book and bound periodical volumes, and more than 1,400 different periodical and newspaper titles in paper and electronic formats.   • Freshman Seminar Class (GSC 101): In a class of 18 or fewer, freshmen interact with an instructor who is also their first-year advisor. This course helps freshmen adjust to college life by giving tips on developing good study habits, time management techniques, and critical thinking skills. It is a 1-hour credit course, and all freshmen are highly encouraged to sign up for it in the fall. For more information, call the Registrar's Office at 502-863-8024.
  • Freshman Year Advisors: Twenty-two selected faculty and professional staff serve as advisors to first year students.  Fourteen of these advisors also serve as instructors in the Freshman Seminar class (GSC 101) and work with students in course selection and college adjustment. Students are encouraged to select an advisor in their departmental major at the end of their second semester or beginning of their third semester.
  • Georgetown Commuter's Association: This support group is for to all traditional, non-traditional, and part-time commuter students. The association meets monthly to discuss concerns and plan social activities. For more information or to join, call Student Life at 502-863-8004.
  • GSS 382 - Preparation for the GRE, LSAT, GMAT and MCAT: These mini-courses are taught by Georgetown faculty and prepare upper-class students for the standardized exams given for graduate school (GRE), law school (LSAT), business school (GMAT), and medical school (MCAT) admittance.
  • Health Services: During the week, a certified physician's assistant sees students on an appointment basis or emergency walk-in basis. Health Services is located at 407 Hollyhock Lane. Call 502-863-8201 for more information.
  • International Student Support: For academic issues, international students work with the International Student Advisor, and for visa issues they work with the Assistant Director of Student Life.  For course assistance, international students are highly encouraged to use the Writing Center and Peer Tutors as an on-going source of academic support. Call 502-863-8121 to speak with the International Student Advisor.
  • International Study Abroad Program: Through this program students can study in Europe, Great Britain, Latin America, Africa or Asia for a few weeks, a summer, a semester or a year. Also, students can  receive academic credit and their financial aid or scholarship from Georgetown College. Some Study Abroad Scholarships are available. It is highly recommended that students have an international experience during their undergraduate years. For more information, call the International Studies Coordinator at 502-863-8410.
  • Math Tutoring: The math department has peer tutors available selected evenings for Math 107 (College Algebra), Math 121 (Differential Calculus) and Math 201 (Elementary Probability and Statistics). Check the schedule outside room Asher Science Center 102 for specific information or consult a math instructor.
  • Multicultural Awareness Society (MAS): MAS is a campus organization which creates awareness of diverse cultural values and supports the development of students academically and socially. For more information, call the MAS advisor at 502-863-8121.
  • Service Learning: The G.I.V.E. program offers Georgetown students a variety of volunteer opportunities. Service projects and annual projects range from one hour per week to projects that can last all semester. Projects include on-campus events such as "Into the Streets and" "Make a Difference Day" to volunteering with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, American Heart Association, Habitat for Humanity, the American Red Cross, Hospice of the Bluegrass, and others, depending on interest.
  • Student Life: The college's innovative student life program encourages students to develop leadership skills by offering numerous opportunities for campus and community involvement. Questions? Call the Dean of Student Life at 502-863-8004
  • Study Skills Tutoring: For individual sessions on analyzing and improving time management awareness, note taking and test taking skills, and study habits, call 502-863-8034.
  • Study Tables for Athletes: Some athletes will participate in a study table usually directed by the athletic department staff. Students meet at set times to work on assignments, often in the Ensor Library where computers are available.
  • Tiger Technology Training Center ("T3") offers free technology training and support for students. The Center is staffed by Student Technology Mentors. Questions? Call 502-863-7021.
  • Union of Black Leaders (UBL): This groups provides an opportunity for minority students to meet together to acquire leadership skills through working with the administration of Georgetown College. Call 502-863-8370 for more information.
  • Writing Center: There are 16 writing peer tutors available on a walk-in or appointment basis. The Center is located in Learning Resource Center 016 and is open during the day (Tues. and Thurs. 9:30 - 11:00 AM and  Mon. through Thurs. 12:30 - 4:30 PM) and in the evening (Sun. through Thurs. 7:00-9:00 PM).  Call the Hotline (502-863-8423) for questions or to set up an appointment.
