TEXTS, MATERIALS

    • 2005-2006 Georgetown College Agenda (Student Handbook)

    • With A Hammer For My Heart by George Ella Lyon

    • Freshman Seminar BLACKBOARD Site

LEARNING OUTCOMES AND COURSE OBJECTIVES

Students will be knowledgeable about the skills necessary for an enriched academic experience, have knowledge of the opportunities offered by the college for involvement and support, and be aware of the value of diversity among peers.

Goals:

  • To promote a positive academic and social adjustment and assimilation into the College.
  • To improve student attitudes toward the teaching/learning process and towards faculty who are responsible for providing this process.
  • To introduce students to American higher education with an emphasis on Georgetown College's history and traditions and respect for the ideal of the Liberal Arts.
  • To introduce students to an author through a book discussion, lecture, and a visit.
  • To have students use such helping resources of the institution as the Library, Meetinghouse, Wellness Center, Writing Center, and Tutoring Services.
  • To promote computer literacy and activities involving the use of word processing/applications, e-mail, Blackboard, and the Internet.
  • To provide students with additional training, practice, experience, and knowledge in the following skills areas: decision-making, goal setting, planning, time management, and group/teamwork.
  • To enhance or establish a respect for diversity and tolerance as a member of the College's family in accordance with the intent and spirit of the College's Guiding Principles.
  • To help students learn and develop a set of adaptive study, coping, critical thinking, logical problem-solving, and survival skills.

Individual faculty advisors will determine most policies for attitude and participation evaluation.  However, the following policies are universal:

  • More than two unexcused class absences will result in automatic failure.

  • "Scholastic dishonesty" is the submission of work material that is not one’s own.  If this occurs, the guidelines established within the Honor Code for Georgetown College Students will be followed.

JOURNALS

The journal will be evaluated for depth of reflective content.  A good journal entry will contain substantial writing, illustration, thought, and exploration.  An unacceptable entry will be a "laundry list" of activities done without details or insight.

Your journal is due at the beginning of your weekly small group meeting.

You are responsible for assignments given on the Freshman Seminar Web Site.  Please check your BLACKBOARD site on a regular basis.  Announcements and/or assignments will be posted on these pages.
