FRESHMAN SEMINAR--IT'S
A COOL CLASS

--"Hey, Georgetown College freshmen--you gotta take Freshman
Seminar (or GSC 101)."
--"Why?"
--"Let some Freshman Seminar students tell you
why:"
 |
Am I glad I'm in this course. It's
fun--and the info helps to up my grades, too! |
 |
My instructor is always there when I
need to talk to someone. |
 |
I truly look forward to seeing everyone
in my small group each week and having our discussions. |
 |
The class is helping me adjust to
college. |
--"So, exactly what is this Freshman Seminar class?"
In a class of 20 or fewer, you will interact with an instructor who is also
your first-year advisor. Freshman Seminar faculty are committed to giving you the personal
attention you deserve as a new Georgetown student. Also, your faculty advisor will help
you plan for your future courses at the college.
The academics at Georgetown are challenging, but this course will help you improve your
test taking, note taking, time management, textbook reading, and critical thinking
skills.
It will help you be ahead of those who choose not to take the course.
--"What else is Freshman Seminar?"
You will also interact with a variety of exciting guest speakers who
will challenge your thinking. You may hear about such topics as:
Healthy Relationships: Learn how to prevent
relationships from going down the drain. For example, if you're a neatnik and your new
roommate is free-spirited in the orderly department-what do you do in order to get along?
Ethics and Civic Responsibility: Are those empty words?
Question a popular Georgetown College philosophy professor on what they can mean to you.
Values and Diversity: Cross-examine the head of the
Kentucky American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) about law making
decisions.
Religion and Science: Discover if
religion and science are in conflict or are more similar than you may expect.
Traditions: "Meet" Elijah
Craig, an early Georgetown historical figure, or Kentucky's Henry Clay, and ask them questions about Kentucky's
frontier days.
Stress Management: Find out how to handle your emotions so they don't interfere with your
academics. Or, find out how to control $$ spending and avoid credit card debt.
Career Directions: Ruminate with Georgetown's
Career
Center Director about job opportunities and career goals.

Through service learning you will have the opportunity to investigate charitable
organizations in the local area.
You might work with the Humane Society, Habitat for Humanity, Into the Streets Project,
the Salvation Army, or the Big Brothers, Big Sisters Program.
--"What else is Freshman Seminar?"
It's the Alpine Challenge Course. You literally can soar to great
heights if you so choose.
How high is high? Try 40 feet up!
Freshman Seminar students take part in the Alpine Challenge Course. The course is located
in Georgetown College's new athletic complex. You will go with your small group,
instructor, and a
trained facilitator to do the 4-hour course. Not only is the course a team-building
experience, but it's also an opportunity for developing your leadership skills and problem
solving talents.
But, don't fear...you and your classmates will do the "low course" (that is,
your feet are usually close to the ground), and all activities are voluntary. Students say
the Alpine Challenge Course is one of the most enjoyable "shakin' and movin'"
activities they did their first semester. For more Ropes pictures, click

--"What else is Freshman Seminar?"

On one special night your class will be honored with a
Banquet where you are served fine cuisine and learn about how to eat at
the Ritz.
While finding out which of the 3 forks to use, you will hear about etiquette customs from
students and faculty who have lived abroad. When and where is it correct to eat with your
fingers? Find out if it's Spain, Nigeria, Chile, or Japan.
Also, at the banquet
you'll learn about Georgetown's International Study Abroad Program,
and the discussion will whet your appetite for learning more about other cultures.

Oh, you also make lots of friends! This 1-hour credit course will fit into your schedule with no problem.
The course finishes mid-November.
--"Hmmm
so that's what Freshman Seminar
is--sign me up!"
