Nothing so typified the antislavery movement of the Civil War as the involvement of the Black soldier. In the last two years of the war nearly 180,000 blacks joined the Union army, which made 10% of all who served the Northern cause. It could be argues that the use of black soldiers was the most groundbreaking move of the war. Black Soldiers quickly became the symbol for the struggle for freedom for the African-American. Their goal was to earn a new sense of belonging in the United States.
