By the time of the Civil War, the Indians had made their home in the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains. The land was theirs, virtually untainted for hundreds of years. Suddenly, the white man invaded through westward expansion. Trails were carved out, railroads were built, and settlers rushed in, trampling upon their grounds. It would not take very long before Indians and settlers drew blood from each other. It would take around forty years to settle the conflict, and in that time the Indians were almost wiped off the plains by the US Army. The outcome was disgraceful to the Indians. The Indian Wars on the Great Plains were a very sad testament to the price of westward expansion.
