General Network and Bradford Information

NOTE:  A few students are experiencing difficulty using Bradford on some PCs.  Here are the few things you can do to if you are having problems:

1.  Temporarily turn off your browser's popup blocker, or create an exception for campusmanager.georgetowncollege.edu

2.  Disable wireless temporarily, and plug directly into the network wall jack.  Hubs and switches will not work on the network until they are manually registered through ITS, every semester.

3.  Go slow, give each step time.  Don't click the "Finish" button until after you see:  a) a popup window about reconfiguring your network, or b) a popup window asking you to reboot.  (if you don't see one of those two, are you 100% SURE you verified steps 1 through 4?...)

4.  If you still can't get to the web after reconfiguration/reboot, clear out your internet browser cache and try again.  A very small number of PCs need this extra step.  (Tools, Internet Options in Internet Explorer... Tools, Clear Private Data in Firefox)

5.  If you have tried all of these, and still can't get past the registration page, contact ITS for further troubleshooting

The Bradford Network Access Control is designed to prevent unauthorized users and devices from attaching to our network.  Bradford also contains an emergency notification system that will send alerts directly to your machine.   It also turns on Windows Updates and in the near future will ensure Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware programs are installed and current on definitions.   This will make the network safer for all of us.

 Later in the semester, your machine may be placed in a "remediation" network if it is found not to comply with the Safe Computing Policy.  In order to pass, you will need to have an Anti-Virus program (Microsoft ForeFront is provided free of charge to all GC students), an Anti-Spyware program (Microsoft’s Defender and SpyBot are two examples of free software, and your Operating System must be up to date on patches.  Please see each company’s website on how to download and install one of these programs.  Currently Macintosh and Linux machines are exempted from this requirement.  However, Macintoshes will still need to register.  If you are using a Linux machine, please contact the Help Desk for more information.

Bradford Installation Instructions

When prompted for a user name and password, use your normal network information.  For example;

Jsmith232

*******

1)      After booting your machine and logging in, you will need to open an Internet Browser before trying to access any network resources such as Email.  A page will automatically load that will prompt you to authenticate using your network username and password.

2)      Bradford will then install a program onto your machine.  Please follow the instructions carefully in order to ensure proper installation--rushing could break the process, so take your time and make sure each step has time to complete.  Until this program is installed and your machine has been reconfigured or SHUTDOWN and restarted, you will not be able to access network resources such as email, the Internet, etc.  If you receive a message of “Failed”, do not panic.  Follow the rest of the prompts and SHUTDOWN your machine when requested.  After shutting down, your machine should return to normal operation on the network.

Gaming Consoles

Gaming consoles such as Xboxes, Playstations, etc using the wired network will need to be registered before they can be used on the network.  Wireless consoles do not need to be registered because they are automatically registered when you setup the wireless connection.

1)      Bring up the console at least once on the network before trying to register it.

2)      Click on this link to open the gaming console registration page;

Student owned Wireless Access Points (aka WiFi)

Student owned wireless access points are not permitted on the campus network.  All access points use the same radio bands therefore the campus wireless would suffer from too many radios transmitting in the same bands.

Georgetown College Campus Wireless

In order to access the College’s Wireless network you will need to access the broadcasted ID of GCWiFi.  Please refer to your devices manual for how to operate your wireless software/adapter.  For information on wireless locations and how to connect to GCWiFi please visit this link;

Dorm room network access via Ethernet cable

There is a network jack that you may connect your dorm room computer into.  A CAT5 patch cable is needed in order to use this resource.  Patch cables are the responsibility of the student and If needed may be purchased in the College's Store.  Do Not Plug into the black jack.  The black jacks are for telephones, not networking.  One end of the cable plugs into the WHITE wall jack and the other plugs into your computer.  After starting the computer open an Internet web page such as www.msn.com to ensure that your computer has been registered and can access the Internet.
