A Word About Printing Services

Networked laser printers are available in all computer classrooms, the T3 Center, and throughout the LRC. Users needing to print documents for academic purposes may therefore print from any computer connected to the campus network. Printing from these computers, therefore, requires that users login to the campus network.

To date, printing has been offered free of charge to all faculty, staff and students. However, the cost of paper and other expendable printing supplies is increasing rapidly and now exceeds tens of thousands of dollars per year. Consequently, ITS has been asked to test and evaluate a means to monitor the number of pages per print job and keep a running total for each user. During the spring and summer of 2002, ITS used a utility known as “P-Counter” in its offices. During the fall semester of 2002, the testing of this utility will be gradually expanded campus-wide.

No final decision has been made as to whether or not a charge will be assessed for printing. Many ideas have been discussed. Included in these discussions is a recognition that for students printing is often a requirement of a class and that the cost of such printing for academic purposes should not be borne by the student. Regardless of the final determination, it is a safe assumption that some charge will be assessed sometime in the future.

Any comments you have are welcome.
