CONNECTING A MACINTOSH COMPUTER
TO THE CAMPUS NETWORK

Prerequisites

To connect your Mac to the campus network, you need an ethernet card or port in your Mac, an ethernet cable of sufficient length to reach from your Mac to one of the beige outlets in your room, and System software 6.0.3 or higher.

If you have System Software 8.0 or higher (this could include iMacs), follow these steps:

  1. From the Apple Menu, choose Control Panel
  2. Choose TCP/IP
  3. In the Configure field choose "Configure Using DCHP Server."
  4. Make sure your are set to use the Ethernet Port.

If you System software 7.x,  you will need MacTCP installed on your system. MacTCP is a communications control panel that helps Macs communicate over non-AppleTalk networks. MacTCP is not freeware, so we cannot distribute it to you. Contact an Apple software dealer if you need to obtain MacTCP.

Configuring MacTCP

First, check to see if you have MacTCP installed. Under your Apple pull-down menu in the upper left corner of the Mac screen, select Control Panels. Then check the Control Panels window to see if you have a MacTCP icon. If you find it, you may proceed to configuration.

  1. First check your "Network" control panel to make sure you are using Ethernet. To do this select Control Panels from the Apple menu. Doubleclick on "Network." If "EtherTalk" is not selected, select it.
  2. Remain in the Control Panels window and find the MacTCP icon. Under System 6, this will be in the list along the left-hand side of the window; under System 7 it will be in the Control Panels folder. Doubleclick on the icon.
  3. Select the "Ethernet" icon at the top of the window.
  4. Click the "More" button to open the configuration window.
  5. Check that the "Obtain Address" button has been set to "Manually". If not, click the button to do so. In the "IP Address" box, check to see if the "Class" pop-up menu is set to "C". If not, click on the letter and choose "C" from the menu that appears. Check to see if the mask number is "255.255.255.0". If not, change it by dragging the slider on the bar just below the number until it is correct. Drag to the right if the numbers are too small, to the left if the numbers are too large.
  6. In the "Routing Information" box in the lower left of the MacTCP configuration window, enter your Gateway Address. Your Gateway Address is the first three numbers of your IP address followed by a 254. For example, if your IP address is 209.215.177.230, your Gateway Address is 209.215.177.254 (be sure to include the periods between the numbers).

Your IP address number is (get this number from ITS):

  7. In the "Domain Name Server Information" box, type georgetowncollege.edu in the first "Domain" box, then type 209.215.177.237 in the first "IP Address" box.
  8. Once you have configured these parameters, click the "OK" button to close the configuration window, then close the MacTCP control panel by clicking its close box. You may get the message "You must restart the Macintosh for your changes to take effect." Click "OK" (you may get this message more than once).
  9. Type the IP address number above in the box provided. Be sure to include the periods between the four numbers.
  10. Restart by choosing the Restart command from the Special menu.
