Changing network passwords

In addition to your email password, you have two passwords that are used anytime you logon to a networked Windows computer on campus. Each networked Windows computer uses a workstation password associated with your account, and the network servers use a network password associated with your account. Both your workstation and network passwords are initially set to your middle initial and the last four digits of your social security number. To change your passwords:

On a Windows 95/98 computer

To change both your workstation and network password

bulletDouble-click the My Computer icon (usually in the upper left-hand corner of the desktop)
bulletDouble-click Control Panel
bulletDouble-click Passwords
bulletClick Change Windows Password
bulletClick Microsoft Networking
bulletType your current password
bulletType your new password
bulletType your new password again in the Confirm field.
bulletClick OK to save the new password

To change only your workstation password (only affects the PC you are using)

bulletDouble-click the My Computer icon
bulletDouble-click Control Panel
bulletDouble-click Passwords
bulletClick Change Windows Password
bulletType you current password
bulletType your new password
bulletType your new password again in the Confirm field
bulletClick OK to save the new password

To change only your Network password

bulletDouble-click the My Computer icon
bulletDouble-click the Control Panel
bulletClick Change Other Passwords
bulletHighlight Microsoft Networking and click Change
bulletType your current password
bulletType your new password
bulletType you new password again in the Confirm field
bulletClick OK to save the new password

On a Windows for Workgroups computer

To change both your workstation and network password

bulletFrom the Main group, double-click the DOS Prompt icon
bulletType "net password" without the quotes and press Enter
bulletType your current password and press Enter
bulletType your new password and press Enter
bulletType your new password again to confirm the change and press Enter
bulletType "exit" no quotes and press Enter to return to Windows.

The next time you log on your new password will be in effect.

To change only your workstation password (only affects the PC you are using)

bulletFrom the Main group, double-click the Control Panel icon
bulletDouble-click the Network icon
bulletClick the Password button
bulletEnter your current password. Enter your new password. Enter your new password again to confirm it. Click OK and exit back to Program Manager

The next time you log on your new password will be in effect.
