Instructions for Connecting Windows 95/98
Computers to the Campus Network
What you will need: An ETHERNET card installed in your computer and an ETHERNET CABLE
(with RJ45 connectors) of sufficient length to reach the outlet in your room; your Windows 95/98 diskettes or CD-ROM
(may not be needed), and a little bit of patience.
- Connect your ETHERNET cable from your ETHERNET card to one of the beige outlets in your
room.
- Start Windows 95/98.
- Click Start, choose Settings, click Control Panel, and double-click the Network icon.
- Check to see if the following network components are installed:

 | If these are installed, go
to step 7. Otherwise go to step 5. |
- If your network adapter card is not installed, call the Information Technology
Help Desk at 4357.
- If Client for Microsoft Networks is not installed:

Click Add.

Click Client, then click Add.

Click Microsoft, click Client for Microsoft Networks, click OK.
- Click IPX/SPX-compatible Protocol, then click Remove.
- Click Add.
- Click Protocol, then click Add.
- Click Microsoft, click TCP/IP, click OK.
- Click TCP/IP, then click Properties.
- If "Obtain an IP address automatically" is not chosen, click the button
beside it to choose it.
- Click on the DNS configuration tab and enable DNS. Put your computer name in the
host box and georgetowncollege.edu in the domain box.
- Click on the WINS configuration and make sure use DHCP for WINS resolution is
checked.
- Click OK.
- Click the Identificaton tab. In the Computer Name box type any name (up to 15
characters) to identify your computer to the network. In the workgroup box, type student.
Click OK.
- Click Client for Microsoft Networks. Click Properties. If Log on to Windows NT
domain is not chosen, click the button next to it to choose it. In the Windows NT Domain
box, type STU. (Note: Do not type the period)

- Click OK. Click OK. Answer Yes, you want to restart the computer now. When Windows
95/98 restarts, you will be asked to log in to the domain STU. If you do not wish to connect
to the network, click Cancel to work on your computer as a standalone computer. Otherwise
enter your network ID and password. Click OK.
NOTE: You may receive a message "No domain server was available to validate your
password. You may not be able to gain access to some network resources." This is OK,
so click OK.
If this is the first time your have logged on at this computer, you will probably be
asked to confirm your password. Type your password again to confirm it.
To test your network connection, click on Start, open programs, and click MS-DOS
Prompt. At the dos prompt, type winipcfg and press Enter. An IP
configuration box should appear listing an IP address as 207.93.xxx.x, a subnet mask as
255.255.255.0, and a default gateway as 207.93.xxx.1. If you see this, congratulations,
you are connected to the network. Close the box, type exit and press Enter to
return to windows.
