** Join us on February 10, 2009 for the Internship Awareness Fair **

Goals of the Program

The Graves Center Internship Program will . . .

  • assist students in bridging their liberal arts education with their vocational journey by fulfilling a role of preparation through practical experience;
  • provide students with an opportunity to apply knowledge and skills from the classroom while gaining “hands-on” experience;
  • provide students with an opportunity to try out a prospective career and determine if that chosen career field is a good fit;
  • assist students in methods of building contacts for future employment and personal growth; and
  • provide students with an opportunity for self-awareness through reflection on the internship experience.

Why Internships?

A Potential Job — "The percent of interns receiving full-time job offers as a result of their internships increased from 56.9 percent in 2001 to 69.6 percent in 2008." (2008 National Association of Colleges and Employers Experiential Education Survey)

Career Success — "There is some indication that full-time recruits coming out of internship/co-op programs are 'more successful' as employees than those drawn from outside of the internship/co-op process. A greater percentage of these recruits remain employees of their original firms after five years than do non-intern/co-op recruits." (2008 National Association of Colleges and Employers Experiential Education Survey)

Types of Internships:

  • An Academic Internship is for credit ranging from 1 to 3 credit hours per semester and must be approved by a faculty member in the student’s major area of study, before the internship begins. Academic Internships may be paid or non-paid. They are offered during the fall, spring and summer semesters. Academic Internships are governed by the faculty and academic departments.
  • A Career/Experience Internship is non-credit and provides a valuable learning experience that fits students’ specific vocational goals. This may be paid or non-paid and offered during the fall, spring and summer semesters. Students who complete an internship through Georgetown College’s Internship Program will receive a transcript notation.
