The study of a foreign language is an integral part of a liberal arts education and, moreover, has become essential for living and working as a "citizen of the world" in an increasingly global society.

Students pursuing a language major are encouraged to spend a summer, semester, or year in a foreign study program. The Department offers majors and minors in:

All students at Georgetown College are required to demonstrate proficiency at the intermediate level in one of the languages offered as part of their degree program. The general education language requirements can be met in:

  • French
  • German
  • Greek
  • Japanese
  • Latin
  • Spanish

A foreign language major is a valuable complement to other majors, such as in the political, health, and social sciences, technology and the arts. Graduates may seek careers in such areas as:

  • travel
  • social work
  • foreign missions
  • diplomacy
  • international business (especially with a major in Commerce, Language and Culture)
