As efforts to expand free trade worldwide achieve increasing success, all business is becoming international business.  Georgetown College's major in Commerce, Language and Culture, offered in cooperation and collaboration by the Department of Business Administration and Economics and the Department of Foreign Languages, is designed to facilitate the transition into the world of international commerce and trade by providing an integrated course of study in business and foreign languages and culture. Leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree, it is an interdisciplinary major  that prepares students for meaningful, active, and responsible engagement in a career in the contemporary global environment.

For a  Major in Commerce, Language and Culture with German as your Language and Culture choice you have to complete a total of 60 hours including  a business foundation of 24 hours, a language foundation of 18 hours in German beyond the College requirement, 15 hours from the interdisciplinary component, and one 3-hour elective (GER 335, GER 370, GER 420, GER 425, GER 470, HIS 343 are recommended choices. The business foundation courses provide a sound foundation to enable students to understand the world of business.  It includes accounting (the language of business), economics (the underlying theory beneath business study), finance (the major tool for evaluating business decisions), and international business operations, a course  which introduces students to the interaction of business and international matters.

The language foundation courses will enable you to reach an intermediate level of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in German.  Furthermore, through the study of literary works, the arts, theater, music, geography, political structures, family life, and history you will be prepared to understand, enjoy and participate in the culture of the primary German-speaking countries, Austria,
Germany and Switzerland.
GERMAN 230: Intermediate German II (3 hours credit; offered Spring semester) Prerequisite: GER 201 or equivalent.
GERMAN 235: German Conversation and Composition (3 hours credit) Prerequisite: GER 230 or instructor's permission.
GERMAN 301: Readings in Culture and Literature (3 hours credit) Prerequisite: GER 230 or instructor's permission.
GERMAN 310: German Cultural Traditions (3 hours credit) Prerequisite: GER 301 or instructor's permission.
GERMAN 312: Contemporary German Culture (3 hours credit) Prerequisite: GER 301 or instructor's permission.
GERMAN 355:  German for the Professions (3 hours credit)

These courses bring together the separate strands developed in the business and language foundation courses.  On-campus courses are team-taught by Foreign Language and Business Administration faculty.  The internship and study abroad requirements enable you to convert classroom knowledge into working knowledge tempered by experience.

CLC 319: Foundations in Culture (3 hours credit) Prerequisite: GER 230 or equivalent and admission to the CLC Program.
This course introduces the student to the concept of culture and related theoretical questions—such as the validity or nonvalidity of cultural stereotypes and the notion of highbrow vs. lowbrow culture—as well as to aspects of the French, German, Japanese, and Spanish-speaking cultures that are part of the CLC Program.  Prerequisite: FRE/GER/JPN/SPA 230 or equivalent and admission to CLC Program.

INS 000: Study Abroad (3 hours credit): A 3-hour course, preferably in German language/culture/literature, in an approved study-abroad program.

BUA 423: International Marketing (3 hours credit) Prerequisites: BUA 326 or CLC 319, BUA 353
BUA 450: Business Policy and Strategic Planning (3 hours credit) Prerequisite: This course should be taken as the capstone (last course) in the student's program of study.
BUA 460: Internship (3 hours credit): Internship in an approved international company or organization.
