Michael Rich was born in Connecticut and grew up in Colorado and California. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1986 where he rowed with the heavyweight crew team and also participated in year-long exchange program at Keiō University in Tokyo, Japan. He completed his MA in Asian Studies at Yale University, and after spending a year in China and Taiwan, returned to Yale for his doctoral studies under Edwin McClellan. While at Yale, he also studied Chinese poetry and writing under Taiwanese poet Cheng Ch’ou-yu.  Michael has taught in Colorado, Arizona and New York, and lived in Asia for over 6 years, including 5 in Japan. He is currently translating a commentary on the early 17^th century treatise on Japanese archery, Shikan no sho.  Michael also practices kendō, kyūdō and nō theatre, and enjoys hunting and fishing with his two daughters and dog Fuji. His wife Fumi, is from Gifu, Japan where her family has made sake for 16 generations.
