Audition Guidelines

The following audition guidelines are for music majors, minors, and electives who wish to be considered for ensemble scholarships:

All students should provide:

Music Theory Assessment

Incoming students choosing to major or minor in music will be asked to complete a written Music Theory Assessment on their scheduled audition date--takes 10-20 minutes. Students who test below a predetermined score will be encouraged to spend time during the spring and summer, prior to their fall GC entrance, working on music theory fundamentals.

WIND INSTRUMENTALISTS

  • Prepared solo;
  • Chromatic scale covering the entire range of the instrument;
  • Selected major scales/arpeggios;
  • Sight reading material.

VOCALISTS

  • Prepared piece from memory from the classical vocal repertoire;
  • Vocalize for the music faculty.

PIANISTS/ORGANISTS

  • Two solo works originally written for piano. The two pieces should represent two different composers of different stylistic periods (i.e., Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic or Modern). A movement or individual piece from a larger work may be considered as one piece.
  • Sight reading.
  • Repertoire list (i.e., a list of pieces you have studied).
