
The following professional areas represent a number of
career possibilities in the field of music. Georgetown College
music graduates are currently engaged in many of these areas.
While some professions require additional training, the foundation for
each may begin with a Georgetown College music degree.
PERFORMING ARTS
POPULAR MUSIC: Television, recording/movie
industry, theater, commercial music groups of all types.
SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA: Thousands of U.S.
orchestras of all sizes provide a wide range of opportunity for
musicians to perform symphonic music, either part-time or
full-time. Conducting or orchestra administration is also a
possibility.
ARMED FORCES: The Army, Navy, Air Force and
Marine Corps each maintain various types of musical organizations and
offer career opportunities for musicians.
COMPOSING AND ARRANGING: American composers
and lyricists are enjoying unprecedented success, particularly in the
realm of popular music.
OPERA COMPANY: Both vocal and instrumental
opportunities are available in this field.
EDUCATION
MUSIC EDUCATION: Teaching positions are
possible at a number of levels for both instrumental and vocal
specialists: elementary school, middle or junior high school and
senior high school. In addition to teaching positions, there are
also public school supervisory positions available in music. With
graduate training, a career in higher education is also possible.
PRIVATE TEACHING: Private instruction is an
ideal part-time occupation, but many musicians choose to operate a
full-time studio.
BUSINESS
MUSIC RETAILING: Retail sales and marketing
opportunities are available in a number of areas, including
instrumental, amplification, MIDI/computer equipment, sheet music and
recording sales. Some areas include repair services.
MANUFACTURING: Employment opportunities in
manufacturing have grown steadily over the years with increased interest
in making music at both the amateur and professional levels.
MUSIC PUBLISHING: A multifaceted field
composed of interdependent operations, each involving a specific career
opportunity.
PIANO TUNING: A career in piano
tuning/technology may include tuning through complete
refurbishing. Tuner-technicians often specialize in a particular
facet of the profession.
COMPUTER INDUSTRY: Many computer
application companies prefer music majors. Must be something about

RECORDING
PRODUCER/ARTIST AND REPERTOIRE: Recording
industry careers are available not only in performance, but also in the
areas of recording production and talent search.
ARRANGING/COPYING/CONTRACTING: A number of
behind-the-scenes jobs are available that are related to music industry.
RECORDING ENGINEER/MIXING: Every recording
session requires a skilled technician who is knowledgeable in the areas
of current recording technology and the art of music mixing.
ALLIED FIELDS
CHURCH MUSIC: Careers in church music can
be almost as numerous and varied as the churches themselves.
Church music opportunities provide a rewarding medium in which to lead
others in music-making, as well as helping the church enrich lives
through music.
MUSIC THERAPY: Music therapy employs music
media to maintain, restore and improve mental and physical health.
Opportunities are available at institutions which provide health
services. Graduate training is normally required.
MUSIC CRITICISM: Many newspapers employ a
person whose job it is to review music performances. A strong
foundation in both music and writing skills is required.
MUSIC LIBRARIAN: Most universities,
conservatories, and some colleges have separate music libraries with
professional music library directors.
