The following repertoire applies primarily to flute majors, although some works may be appropriate for minors.

Technique and Literature

FIRST YEAR

 

FALL Correct hand position, concept of tone, and understanding of the embouchure. Chromatic and all Major Scales/Arpeggios, from memory, covering the entire range of the instrument. Harmonics exercises for the embouchure. Long tones, etc., from De La Sonorite--M. Moyse.

SPRING Major Scales in Broken Thirds, from memory, covering the entire range of the instrument. Vibrato exercises in conjunction with Taffanel-Gaubert No. 4.

LITERATURE Taffanel-Gaubert, 17 Grand Exercises in Technique; Andersen, Etudes, Op. 33; Moyse, 24 Melodious Studies with Variations. Handel, C Major and G Major Sonatas; Marcello, F Major Sonata; Molique, Andante; Mozart, Andante; Bach, G Minor Sonata; Hindemith, Sonata; selected additional repertoire.

 

SECOND YEAR

FALL Harmonic Minor Scales/Arpeggios, from memory, covering the entire range of the instrument. Double and triple tonguing.

SPRING Melodic Minor Scales, from memory, covering the entire range of the instrument.

LITERATURE Andersen Etudes, Op. 30, Op. 63. Bach, B Minor and Eb Major Sonatas; Doppler, Pastorale Fantasie Hongroise; Poulenc, Sonata; Kuhlau, F Major Sonata; selected works from Moyse (ed.) Flute Music by French Composers: Ganne, Faure, Chaminade, Enesco, Taffanel; selected additional repertoire.

 

THIRD YEAR

FALL Seventh-Chord Arpeggios (MM7, Mm7, mm7), from memory, covering the entire range of the instrument.

SPRING Fully-Diminished and Half-Diminished Arpeggios, from memory, covering the entire range of the instrument.

LITERATURE Andersen, Etudes, Op. 15; Karg-Elert, Caprices; Jean-Jean, Etudes. Handel, both B Minor Sonatas; Quantz, G Major Concerto; Debussy, Syrinx; Hue, Fantasie; Mozart, G Major Concerto; Varese, Density 21.5; Reinecke, Sonata Undine; selected additional repertoire. Orchestra excerpt studies.

FOURTH YEAR

FALL Augmented Arpeggios, Broken Intervals, Diminished Scales, Whole Tone Scales covering the entire range of the instrument.

SPRING Major Pentatonic Scales covering the entire range of the instrument.

LITERATURE Selected etudes by Andersen, Soussman, Moyse. Telemann, Fantasies (selected); Griffes, Poem for Flute and Orchestra; Mozart, D Major Concerto; Kennan, Night Soliloquy; Copland, Due; selected additional repertoire. Orchestral excerpt studies. Advanced:  Bach, A Minor Partita; Prokofiev, Sonata; Ibert, Concerto; Berio, Sequenza; Schubert, Variations; Jolivet, Chant de Linos; Nielson, Concerto.
