Be able to define/describe the characteristics of all the "smaller" forms (D 1-6).

Be able to describe binary and ternary forms, including harmonic tendencies in major and minor for binary.

Be able to define open and closed formal sections.

Be able to describe the difference between rounded binary and ternary forms.

Be able to describe/illustrate the principle of composite ternary form.

Be able to list the three primary and two optional sections of sonata form (in order of appearance).

Be able to name the various elements and key relationships typically found in the exposition of a sonata.

Be able to describe the qualities of the development section of a sonata.

Be able to describe the qualities of the recapitulation section, and how it differs from the exposition.

You will be given a short piece to analyze.  You will be required to determine the overall form of the piece, as well as note modulations, phrases, cadences, and determine if periods are open/closed, parallel/contrasting.  (This piece will be similar to your homework assignments, but will be taken from an anthology I have by Robert Ottman's mentally deranged cousin, Otto Ottman, titled:  Der Musique Examples Dat Der Studunts Vill Nevver Be Able Tu Anilize On Der Bezt Day.)
