Know the relationship of the bass note of an augmented sixth chord
to its tonic key.
Given that the augmented sixth chords are spelled the same in
parallel M/m keys, be able to list which major keys have no parallel
minor key, and which minor keys have no parallel major key.
In regard to augmented sixth chords, be familiar with the chord of
resolution, and the intermediary chord often used in the resolution of
the Gr6 chord (and why).
Be able to describe the resolution of the two intervals which
comprise the augmented sixth.
Know what chord factor is doubled in the three-note augmented sixth
chord.
Be familiar with the alternate spelling of the Gr6 chord in major.
Be able to describe why the Gr6 is useful as a pivot chord in
modulation, and be able to spell it as the other-type chord.
Be able to describe the results of modulation in terms of direction
and interval regarding the three modulation formulas (V7=Gr6,
V7/IV=Gr6, Gr6=V7).
There will also be several part-writing examples involving
augmented sixth chords, some involving modulation. You will be
asked to do part writing and provide Roman numeral analysis symbols.
