Be able to describe 20th-century influences on modes, meter and rhythm, harmony, melody, etc.

Be able to describe characteristics of impressionistic and 20th-century music.

Be able to spell requested chords / scales:  quartal / quintal, pentatonic, whole-tone, etc.

You will be asked to spell extended-tertian chords from popular chord symbols, e.g.:  Bb13, F11, C9, Dmi9, Gdim7, GMA7, etc.

Various definitions, or provide examples:  third relationships, planing, linear cadence, interlocking sequence, circle progression, etc.

There will be a few basic questions in regard to part writing.

Know what chord factors are present in 4-part writing re extended chords (9th, 11th, 13th).  Know which factors are affected in minor.

Various questions re augmented 6th chords:  relationship to tonic, resolution, resolution / progression of the Gr6, spelling of the Gr6 in major, augmented 6th chord modulation formulas, etc.  Also, be able to spell requested augmented 6th chords.

A music excerpt will be provided.  You will be asked to find various components, such as:  polychord, pedal tone, 11th chord, phrygian mode fragment, third relationship, etc., etc.
