There will be five listening examples. You will be asked to
state the usual: song title, artist/band, and a couple of
musical characteristics/decade.
Most questions are multiple choice. There will be a few
short answer.
Be able to briefly describe a contribution or two that jazz made
to jazz rock.
Be able to briefly describe a contribution or two that classical
music made to art rock.
Be able to name a jazz rock/art rock group or two.
Re musical theater, be familiar with a particular Fifth Dimension
hit.
Know what The Who was noted for in terms of stage antics,
and know what their primary claim to musical fame is.
Know which art rock group was noted for their instrumental
virtuosity.
Know which noted solo artist came out of Genesis.
Know which single musician pursued art rock more than any other,
having written multi-movement rock works and adapted many
classical-type works to rock.
Know which American was considered to be at the forefront
of the art rock movement. He was also one of the more wild ‘n’
crazies in the business ... (yep, past tense, unfortunately)
Be familiar with the guitarist-icon who has been around for
decades. He performed with the Yardbirds and, later, Cream.
Be able to correctly match various characteristics to particular
rock styles, such as Punk, Glitter, Heavy metal.
Be able to match artists with particular styles: American
heavy metal, British heavy metal, Glitter, Mainstream, Punk.
From a list of many groups, be able to identify which groups were
fusion bands/artists.
Be familiar with singer/songwriters: one was a major solo
artist, but also wrote tunes for others, such as BS&T, James
Taylor, etc.
Know which singer/songwriter lost favor with fans due to his
"support" of the Ayatollah!
Know yer top reggae cat.
Know yer ‘70s black rock groups, and be familiar with a few of
their tunes.
Know yer disco groups, and be familiar with a few of their
tunes. (If you already know this genre rather well, I'm going
to be a little worried.)
A solo artist and a band, respectively, successfully made the
transition from studio musician to stardom. Yep, know who.
