Hello Band Scholars & Band Friends:

I hope this finds you well. Happy Halloween [if that is your inclination], Happy All Saints Day [if that is your inclination], Happy November [if that is your inclination], Happy Full Moon [if that is your inclination], Happy Time Change [if that is your inclination] – or perhaps any combination of the preceding. Grrr…

This OWS is a bit extended – containing a veritable plethora of information – I cannot possibly over-state the importance of the “PC-DF” [aka Peruse Carefully and Digest Fully] mantra. Grrr…

General Thoughts

● Personal Accountability
As the Band Scholars know, we have started “harping” [for lack of a better word] about PA quite a bit. In the end [as we always keep an eye on the prime directive – each Band Scholar becoming a successful, happy, positively contributing member of society when they are 30] personal accountability is “the deal”. PA regarding your academic progress, PA regarding your work obligations, PA regarding obligations with family and friends, PA regarding your faith, PA regarding how you represent yourself always [the 5FBT for instance], PA regarding your music and musical assignments – heckers I could go on and on. What none of us tend to do [starting with me] is really “look into the mirror”. We tend to be quick to point out perceived weaknesses in others, perhaps less so when it comes to ourselves. Let’s all commit ourselves to greater/increased personal accountability in all things. It is a real help with the ongoing war against I-Me-Mine as we look towards the important goal of We-Us-Ours. Grrr…

● Music For All Occasions
As you know, the historic epitaph of Bands at Georgetown College is MFAO. This shall be particularly true over the next several weeks. During this period of time we have a veritable plethora of performance opportunities – in a wide variety of venues. EXCELLENCE is not the goal – it is an absolute in our world. So whether it is VIP Day II and the Final Regular-Season Home Football Game, supporting our Lady Tigers in their Habitat for Humanity Classic, performing our Fall Anniversary Concert, performing for Chapel, et al it is time to “deliver the mail”. Grrr…

● Community Service/Stewardship
We live and work in a community – this must always be remembered, must never be forgotten. Our Tiger Bands are not some “isolated” or “insular” thing [much as I dislike that word]. We are party of a campus community [Georgetown the College], we are part of a civic community [Georgetown the Town] and “paying back – paying forward” is not only a good “thing” – but a necessary “thing”. It tickled me that over these next few weeks – we have several opportunities to show our commitment to community …

- Annual Fall Food Collection ... as has been our wont since 1993 – the price of admission for the Fall Anniversary Concert is a canned or processed food offering which we shall then forward to the AMEN House for distribution to the less-fortunate in the area. This fall, I am asking Stephen, Kyle, Jonathan and Logan to help with this project [and I shall chat with you four about the needs in this area]. It is also expected that each Band Scholar bring at least one “offering” for this important project. More on this later. Thanks & Thanks.

- Lady Tiger Habitat for Humanity Classic … a coming highlight of our LTBG performance season will be our performance and support of our Lady Tigers and their annual HFHC Tournament. Even though it is a multi-day event – we shall limit our participation to the performance on Friday, 11/13 to protect your time as much as possible. The complete schedule for this event may be found later in OWS4B. It is a privilege and a pleasure to support our Lady Tigers and one of great stewardship projects in existence [Habitat for Humanity] in this tournament.

- Chapel Service … it will again be our pleasure to perform for the Chapel Service [Tuesday, 11/24] as we support our campus community. This is always a very special time – and it is a privilege for us to be involved with the ongoing ministry of our campus.

- Windsor Gardens … we shall be continuing our relationship with the fine folks from WG with their attendance [ones that are able] at our Fall Anniversary Concert and a special Bingo and Holiday Cheer visit in December. More on these later.

● Fall Anniversary Concert
As you hopefully can tell [although we have a long ways to go yet upon this particular journey] our FAC is shaping up nicely. Obvious “winners” … E1, GKW with MTY on the bass, Mighty Fortress with DT at the organ, Colby on the Mozart – the sheer beauty of the Hazo and Daehn selections – the obvious challenge of AO … it should be a good blow and has the possibility and potential to perhaps move even towards the “CB” [aka Classic Blow] category. But lots of work yet to do [and yes, PA comes into play here also].

- FAC – Sectionals
We shall continue our all-important Sectional Sequence this week [through Tuesday, 11/17]. Please note we “alternate” which team goes first each week [fully outlined in the Weekly Schedule]. Please always arrive in a timely manner and be ready to work.

- FAC – Dry Runs
Starting on Friday, 11/6 we shall begin having Dry Runs [and trust me, this first one is going to be very, very arid] which is another important aspect of our concert preparation. As a rule DR1 must be at a minimum 60% level to insure we get to the upper 80% percent performance level [bare minimum] by the time of the FAC. We have learned over the years that the DR are crucial for establishing overall understanding and comfort level with a given play list. Always be a bit early for Friday rehearsals – so we may get started on the DR.

- FAC – Togs
As is fully outlined on the Band Web – Togs for any primary performance of our SB are … ladies = dark dress/skirt [too short usually not a plan], dark shoes, white blouse and Band Blazer; gents = dark trousers, dark shoes, white shirt GC Tie [which we provide] and Band Blazer. All are encouraged to minimize exposure of tattoos, body piercings and “bling” [i.e. excessive jewelry], et al and limit perfume usage. We have a slight “glitch” in the system this fall … as you know we are going to purchase new, fitted Band Blazers for all Fledglings [and a few others] – 15 in total. Our vendor for the BB is having a devil of a time “matching” coats and is trying to find a new supplier. As such, for the FAC, we are probably going to piece together what we can from the existing inventory of BB and have a few “stop-gap-measures” in other areas. Queen of the Togs Karoline and the Worker Bees will be helping. Fit/Style will not be much of an issue – our general goal for the FAC will be to ensure most skin is covered. I know you will be flexible – and it will be great when the new BB arrive.

- FAC – Invites
As you know we enjoy great [and pretty much unprecedented] support for all Tiger Band performances by our campus community, our Band Friends, et al. We never, however want to take this for granted. I/We send out hundreds of e-invitations to our primary concerts, dozens of personal invitations, et al. By Friday [11/6] we shall have the concert posters for each of you to put up in your housing units and around campus, etc. That said, there is still nothing better than a personal invitation to the FAC [i.e. “Hi my name is Kacey, and although I am a bit twisted and like to eat parts of pens, I sure hope you will choose to attend our FAC on Monday 11/23 at 8P in the Chapel”]. Your teachers, our great staff members around campus, your family and friends – should all get this type of personal invite from you. For our primary performances we simply expect lots of butts in the seats [i.e. a full/nearly filled Chapel]. Grrr…

- FAC – Recording
For some many years, Mr. Andrew Dodson, of BADMedia has recorded and produced Cd’s for all of our primary Symphonic Band concerts. He is no longer able to provide this service. We are exploring “options” which might/might not be available by 11/23. Just an FYI on that. Grrr…

- Dress Rehearsal Goodies
The Creech Clan is again going to sponsor DRG after our rehearsal on Sunday, November 22. We are very appreciative to the Creeches for extending this gracious gesture for us. Trust me, they will lay out a nice spread. Plan a few extra minuted for this really, really nice time [will start abut 9P on 11/22].

● Other
- Kibbie [aka 2010 Kentucky Intercollegiate Band] … I have sent preliminary nomination information to several of you. I shall be making the actual nominations in the very near future. Please respond [if you have not done so] about the possibility of perform with/in this prestigious ensemble. Upon this topic, I shall keep you posted.

- Recruiting … we are about at the time when I try to get the “pool” of possible A List Fledglings stabilized. Several of you have already forwarded me names and e-addresses of prospectives, we have several great prospectives forwarded by Band Friends, we have another pool from other multiple sources. As you know [and we say repeatedly] our Tiger Bands are not right for everyone and everyone is not right for our Tiger Bands – but when the “fit” is good, it can be very good. You can all help us in the all-important, ongoing work of recruiting.

● Never Forget
… that for us, music-making [as it was with Mr. Bach] … is a Gift to the Giver! We are never looking for flawless performances – but humanly great performances [to paraphrase Robert Shaw] in all that we do. Grrr…

So here we go …

- please heed Mr. Creech’s admonishments from before this past week’s game [i.e. assigned loading crew help with front-end AND back-end duties … get personal instruments loaded in BVIII as quickly as possible after the game ends

- reminder – the purpose of BVIII is to haul our large I/E [e.g. all percussion, tubers, bari sax, maybe the tenor saxes] – all other instruments are YOUR responsibility [BVIII has become a convenient transporter for trombones and mellophones, et al of late – and we simply do not have enough room for all]

- as the state soccer tournament will resume at Toyota Stadium immediately following the football game [that is why we have the 1P kick-off] it is particularly important for us to get picked up and out in a very timely fashion

NAIA National Play-Off Series Game I [TBA]
honestly friends – I think the participation of our Tigers is extremely unlikely again this year, but unexpected circumstances [right teams winning some games, right teams losing some games] could affect the national poll which might “nudge us” high enough to be in consideration – we always know the preceding Sunday [in this case 11/15] if we are “in” – in the case of “yes” – we will support our Team and our College and the plans will be made as necessary
