Greetings Band Scholars & Band Friends,

Hello – I hope this finds you well and warm. Many, many possible holidays that you and yours might be celebrating about now [e.g. Valentine’s Day, Chinese (or Korean) New Year, President’s Day, Carnival, Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday] and I trust that whichever/whatever are important to you are splendid.

And then there is the weather – even as I have been putting the final touches on this OWS – the weather has been changing and it shall be interesting to see what the beginning of the wee brings to us. Yes, this seemingly never-ending winter weather has been putting a bit of a hurting on us all – and we might be tempted to “wish” that spring was here … I was recently reminded, however, by a cherished friend – that it is never wise to “wish away” days – but to seek in each the little joys and happiness they might hold [still, I have to admit, I wish it was warm – Grrr…].

Okie-Dokie much to do, many great coming events, much about which we need to be planning so here we go …

General Information, Reminders & Thoughts

● 2010 Audition Interview Sequence
Please remember that [weather challenges notwithstanding] that our A/I Days for 2010 are 2/15, 2/20 and 3/6. These days/dates are crucial – as we want to ensure that each visiting prospective Fledgling has a great and positive experience. I know each of you will help and assist with this important phase of our annual recruiting operations.

● Hosts for A/I Days
As we have done now for many years – I/We are going to ask a few of you to help with the Audition/Interview Days. Being around, being pleasant, answering questions, chatting with prospectives, chatting with the kith and kin that sometimes visit with prospectives – all has great benefit. To this end: Times – all A/I are in the morning on a given day, as there is some fluidity to the schedule Dewey and or I will always confirm specific times, for a specific day with you; Togs – let’s wear the Let There Be Grrr… Orange Polo Shirts [and something neat on the lower portion of your program]; Purposeto help make prospectives, their families and friends comfortable and to sense a bit of the very special Georgetown experience. Most are always a bit nervous or angst filled for this experience – and we want to do everything we can to help put them at ease; Specifics – show prospectives to practice rooms, show them to Band Central at the appointed time, answer any questions they may have, answer any questions their families may have, generally be friendly [and as always, I want you to be honest – there are no “party line” answers to a question, just answer questions – provide information to the best of your ability – perhaps always remembering one of the golden rules … “do not tell everything you know” – smile]; Host Assignments – Monday, 2/15 – Erica, Saturday, 2/20 – Dewey, Kacey, Michael & Lauren, Saturday 3/6 – Dewey, Karoline, Neemo, Kendra, Logan & Tori [if you cannot help on your assigned day – please let Dewey or I know – Thanks & Thanks].

● Special Thursday Evening Grrr… Performance – 2/18
For several reasons [each important] we are going to add to our performance schedule a Grrr… Performance this coming Thursday evening – the GTC vs Pikeville Game. With rarest exception, we never “add” anything to the schedule [it is quite chock-full anyhow] but trust me, this is good for the cause. As I have been AWOL from my standing Thursday evening obligation in Lexington for now two weeks – Mr. Creech will be ram-rodding the show [with some special help by Dr. Burnette and continuing great help of each of you] as I shall not be physically present. For this performance – we shall follow essentially the same schedule and protocol we did for the Cumberland game this past week. You may see a detailed schedule/information listed in the Weekly Schedule portion of this OWS. Thanks & Grrr…

● Bassoons & Bassoon Players
Not quite sure why – but Ms. Stuck wanted me to mention this on our OWS – Smile.

● Special Brass Master Class/Mini-Clinic
We have a very special opportunity [and one of which we are going to take advantage] on Friday, February 26. Mr. John Harrison Bryant [trumpet artist extraordinaire from South Carolina] shall be with us and doing a Master Class/Mini-Clinic during the 4:00 Hour rehearsal. This will be a Brass Only Day [which kinda evens out when we had the WW only day on a Friday a few weeks ago]. I know you will benefit greatly and enjoy enormously your time with John and we are beholden to him for giving of his time to be with us. This is special.

● Opus Two
From the mind and hands of our very favorite Composer-in-Residence we shall soon [Friday, 2/19] do the first reading upon Version 1.00 of Opus Two. This will be a very exciting [and important time]. I know you look forward to the “journey” which Opus Two shall represent – and the great addition it shall be to our coming Angels and Demons Show. Thanks & Thanks EJH.

● E1 – Re-Visited and Recording
For several reasons [each of some level of import] we are going to re-distribute, rehearse/review and subsequently record E1 [aka In Praise Rejoice]. As you might know, there is not a good, existing recording of E1 from our Fall Anniversary Concert and it is essential that we have one [and you may see on the Weekly Schedule that we shall plan to make the recording on Wednesday 3/10]. More on this later.

● MSC Conference Tournament Championship
As you perhaps know the Championship Games for the MSC Conference Tournament [in Frankfort, the Civic Center – great place to perform] will be on Saturday 3/6 – 6:00 PM [Women] and Sunday 3/7 – 2:00 PM [Men]. We shall support our Teams and our College only in Championships games [as we have done in the past]. I have set preliminary plans to cover either/both if necessary. As always there shall be four operational “scenarios” – Yes-Yes [girls in – boys in], Yes-No [girls in – boys out], No-Yes [girls out – boys in] and No-No [girls out – boys out]. As in the past – I shall be sending a comprehensive schedule covering each of the four possible scenarios. As always – we shall not know – until the Tournament is underway – which scenario will be in play but we shall do our part no matter what. More on this later. Grrr…

● Angela & Demons Show – Thursday, April 22
Plans move forward [and special thanks to the several of you who are helping in material fashions in preparation for the A&D Show. It should be something. We want to take full advantage of this special time – and have several “specials” regarding the A&D Show in which you each shall be involved. I know you are as excited about this as am I.

● Sectionals, Sub-Sectionals and Dry Run Sequences

Starting after Spring Break [Tuesday, 3/23], we shall begin our Sectional, Sub-Sectional and Dry Run Sequence [usually on Fridays] as we put the finishing touches on our preparations for the Angels and Demons Show. We have learned over the years – that it is this sequence of events that helps ensure your comfort level with the Play List, so that we never have “white knuckle” performances [and evil-666 thing]. We are going to be doing quite a few sub-sectionals this spring [some during the regular 4P rehearsal time] as the music requires it of us.

● Naming of the Year [aka NOTY]
Soon – we shall begin the process for the naming of our coming 2010-2011Band Year/Performance Season. This is an important task – and we shall follow the protocol we have established over the past few years. Initial “nominations will be taken on Friday, 2/19; narrowing of the slate/secondary nominations shall be taken on Wednesday, 2/24, final voting for the NOTY 2010-2011 shall take place on Wednesday 3/10. You might start reflecting upon possibilities for the NOTY.

● Elder Scholar Photos and Information

Elder Scholars might start collecting, asking your respective Ma’s and Pa’s – kith and kin to be collecting, pictures for the now-standard [and much-beloved] PP on the concert. Yes, even though the A&D concert is definitely going to be a bit “different” – we shall retain this important Tiger Band Tradition. It takes us literally weeks to prepare the video loop which shall be shown during our playing of “Old Scottish Melody” so the sooner you can get these to us – the better. We will be using the format we returned to from last year [the spring PP had morphed a bit into an awkward situation for several years] but still need any photos you might have. The photos need to be either sent to me via email or provided, in a digital format on a CD. Please do not include pics of 8MB, et al as they become impossible to work with. We must have these by no later than Wednesday, March 24 – the Wednesday after Spring Break ends [or they shan’t be included]. I’ll be sending specific information to you regarding the information we need regarding each of you. Thanks.

● 2010-2011 Master Performance Schedule
We have begun and shall continue laying plans for the 2010-2011 performance season soon – and of the important, early jobs is the MPS. Annually we try to have the new MPS completed and released by April 15. This helps with planning, et al – plus many, many, many folks throughout our campus community use our MPS for their planning also. Upon this and all we shall be in touch.

● 2010-2011 BLT
Also, rather soon and as we begin to lay plans for our 2010-201 performance season – we shall be reconfiguring the BLT [aka Band Leadership Team]. The BLT is crucial to all of our work and efforts. Members of the BLT help us in many, may ways – some are paid positions, some are not. As we have a great deal of planning to do as we prepare for the 10-11 academic year, I am choosing to establish the new BLT rather sooner than later. If you are interested in being considered for a role on the BLT, please contact either Dewey or I sooner rather than later.

● Academics
Now is the time to ramp-up your efforts for and towards your successful academic progress. Feeling a bit behind in a specific class – talk to the teacher, get a tutor, join a study group, go to the writing center – but take action now!

● The Five-Fold Band Tenets
We must remember always and strive to live daily as exemplars of the 5FBT. They should not be a mindless mantra of which sometimes speak – but a guide to good living!
