Re:       2012 Spring – MOWS 5

            April 23 – May 19

Good Morning Band Scholars, Band Friends and Prospective Band Fledglings,

I hope this finds you well. Seems like after the showers and general dreariness of yesterday, that we are going to have a few days of cooler ambient temperatures. This upsy-downsy weather is something.

It is hard to imagine – but in a few short days, our 2011-2012 performance season, the Live Long and Grrr…, edition of our Tiger Bands shall become naught but a memory. That being the case – let’s be fully-engaged, let’s strive to exceed expectations in each of our final rehearsals – so that Thursday evening may be a true time of musical celebration ~ a special time when we [this version of “we”] last have the opportunity to make music together. I could drone on and on – but it continues to make me more than a bit teary [you know I am a bit of a crier]. So, let’s just forge ahead …

General Thoughts – All Good Things Concert
We are gonna have to work like heckers during these few days to ensure the unqualified success of the AGT show. Let’s face it, our schedule has been somewhat “whacked” all semester – many performances [KUG II, Double-Headers, Kibbie, MSC Tournament, Lady Tigers Fab Four, et al], unexpected events [hail storms, power outages, et al], me having the bubonic plague, more than a few of you having missed more than a few rehearsals [for many assorted reasons – some good (class, labs), some less good (purely personal)] so we have got to really maximize each of the very few minutes we have left.

The ED [aka Emily Dickinson] quote … “we never know how high we are, ‘til called to rise” shall be applicable – we are going to call upon you to rise very high indeed … being “average” is so very easy – striving for “excellence” is so very difficult [which is why most people simply choose to “settle”] – we must be “intentional” in all that we do.

● AGT 3M [aka Music-Making Mantras]
Please remember [and these should never be “things” that we “just say” – they must be “things” that we do] ... Music as a Gift to the Giver; Never looking for a flawless performance [they do not exist] but for humanly great performances; Music is not “real” until we have a chance to share it; The Crowded Stage Concept [about which we shall again chat – but around us, with us always are many, many folks – parents, teachers, mentors friends – who shan’t be with us physically on “the stage” but are those that make the stage crowded always].

● AGT Concert Togs – Modified – Please Note
The BLT and I have decided for the All Good Things show – modified concert togs are most-appropriate. As such, for AGT … All = khaks [brown, tan, etc], Black Live Long and Grrr… Polo Shirts, Band Blazers, semi dress shoes [no tennis shoes]. Team Percussion will not wear your blazers; Miss Hannah – you can wear/take off your Blazer as you choose. As always, all are encouraged to minimize exposure of tattoos, body piercings and “bling” [i.e. excessive jewelry], et al and limit perfume usage.

● AGT Concert Invitations
Although as you know, we send out many, many [hundreds actually] invitation to any of our concerts [digital and hard-copy] the very best concert invitations are personal ones from you. Please personally invite your family, teachers, staff members, friends, enemies, pets, house-plants, et al to our AGT concert. We are always blessed to have a great “house” for any of our concerts … indicative of the good will and performance excellence which decades of Band Scholars have helped to generate. We never want, however, to take this for granted. This year [not unlike the recent past] they are many campus events also occurring Thursday evening [Orange and Black Football Game, Senior Art Show, Take Back the Night, et al] so we want to do everything possible to ensure a great and chipper audience base. Thanks.

● AGT Final Prep – Senior Photos and Information
To complete the video presentation and announcements for the AGT show, I must have the previously requested information in [ASAP] from our Elder Scholars. If you have not sent photos, turned in your biographical materials, let me know if your family will be in attendance – please, please, please do so quickly. Thanks.

● Our All Good Things Concert
I am so tickled about how the AGT concert is coming together. No, we are not going to have to worry about our execution scores being in the 90’s, Yes, I might make some mistakes, you might make some mistakes. But the spirit and intent, great sounds and excellent music-making will be in place. Thanks & Thanks to Hannah – the Weber is going to be great; Thanks & Thanks to Crater – what a joy to work with you on the Swedes; Thanks & Thanks to Click – your work and efforts on the Jager have been wonderful. Then there are the new Hazo and Whitacre tunes [both composed in 2011] and the delightful AGT from our friend Julie [Xerox as we have been calling her] which is wonderful [sorry to Miss Stuck & Co for the sore pinkies]. Miss Haley and Click wailing away on the trio of the March [one of the great clarinet parts of all time], Old Scottish – well, it should be just jim-dandy. Remember always [as previously alluded to in the AGT 3M] the great quote from Maestro Shaw regarding live music-making [which I/We say all of the time] … we are not looking for a flawless performance, but a humanly great one. That’s what the AGT show will be … Humanly Great! Thanks.

● You Had Me At Grrr… 2012-2013 Performance Season [aka YHM@G]
A great deal of our efforts of recent weeks has been preparations for the 2012-2013 YHM@G performance season. As such, please read and heed the following …

- 2012-2013 Master Performance Schedule
Our new MPS is now completed [Draft Form – I/We are still tinkering with it a bit] and I will be sending/distributing it next Sunday [April 29]. Upon receipt, please PC & DF [obviously peruse carefully and digest fully] all information on the 2012-2013 MPS. We work to get this fully stabilized early – so there should be little/no conflicts in your world.

- 2012-2013 Band Leadership Team
We are tickled that the following Band Scholars will be providing focus and direction to our Tiger Bands over the coming year … Director’s Assistant – Travis Mazurek [Fall], J. Eddie White [Spring]; Spiritual Advisor – Haley Lepper; Academic Advisor – Kacey Stuck; Music Advisor – Evan Harrell; Worker Bees – Connor Mook, Nicholas Collins and Courtney Sammons; Special advisors – Lauren Kohake and Johnathan Rogers. Congratulation and Thank-You in advance for the excellent work and efforts I know you each will provide for our Tiger Bands.

- Return of “Institutional” Togs
Graduating [and/or departing Band Scholars] we shall be collecting your “institutional” togs on Monday, April 30th. It is important they are returned then – so we may inventory them. “Institutional” togs include Band Blazers, Grrr… Garment Bags, Band Ties and the Grrr… Warm-Up Suits. All others [Hoodies, Polos, assorted Grrr… T-Shirts, et al] are yours to keep. Thanks.

- SBE [aka Summer Band Epistles]

As I/We have done for the past several years – at the beginning [generally] of each summer month [aka June, July and August] you may expect your SBE [aka Summer Band Epistle]. The SBE's are designed to keep you abreast of important information regarding our Tiger Bands – as well as to provide a chuckle or two [they are also distributed to our “OC” (aka On-Campus) and our “GC” (Geographically-Challenged) Friends of the Tiger Bands]. Please be looking for your SBE towards the beginning of each summer month [and you never know, we might have some “guest authors” for one of the SBE’s].

- Summer Email Addresses

As I shall be sending the SBE's only in electronic format – if you will be using an email address in the summer different from that which I normally use – please let me know before the end of the academic year.

- SP&C – Summer Home

As most of you [hopefully] know, in the summer I wear quite a different hat, as I work with our much beloved SP&C [aka Summer Programs & Camps] Team to coordinate and facilitate the 6000+ [or so] campers that we shall again have on campus. The offices of the SP&C Team ... known affectionately as “The Garrett” are on the top level of the Cooke Memorial Building. If you come by to visit – and cannot find me at Band Central – that is why. Additionally, if you need to reach me by telephone use the 7036 or 7936 numbers – as I seldom check in at 8054 [and I mention this as in past summers my location has confused some Band Scholars – Grrr...].

I am consumed with great joy [what a year it has been], yet great sadness [ending all too soon] to know that in a few days – our LL&G year shall come to a close. As said previously, soon all will be naught but memories – let us enjoy all and cherish all while we can. Be Well

*Note 2*

Please remember that although we are forever “flexible” with your assorted schedule conflicts, et al – there are No Options regarding a Dress Rehearsal … Present You Must Be – this is a potential deal-breaker

*Note*
As you well-know [or at least should as we say it all of the time] a performance sequence is not completed in our world until all I/E [aka Instruments and Equipment] are stowed, taken care of, prepped for shipping, et al.

Immediately at the conclusion of the All Good Things concert we shall break-down the stage and prep all I/E [aka Instruments and Equipment] for shipping. Everyone is expected to pitch in and help – before kibitzing with family and friends [it will take about 10” if everyone is on task].
