Spring 2011
In-Class Music Projects

Music Projects [MP's]
During the course of the semester, you will be asked to complete four "Music Projects" [MP's]. Each music project will be worth twenty-five (25) points and one Final Teaching Project [FTP] which will be worth one hundred (150) points.  There follows a description of these projects, and their respective due dates. Amplification of the projects will be discussed in class. If you purchase the book - you may find the specified "tune" in that resource - if you do not purchase the text - worry naught - I'll make copies of the tunes for you. As with all projects, IF THEY ARE NOT COMPLETED ON TIME, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO KEEP THEM.

Music Project Number One - MPI
[Due on Thursday, February 3]

You will perform on the recorder the two patterns.....Sol-La-Sol-Mi Sol and Sol-La-Ti-La-Sol-Mi-Sol. As with all projects, successful completion and full credit depends on the level of preparation and the accuracy of presentation.

Music Project Number Two - MPII
[Due on Thursday, February 24]

You will perform on the recorder the tune "Teddy Bear". As with all projects, successful completion and full credit depends on the level of preparation and the accuracy of presentation.

Music Project Number Three - MPIII
[Due on Thursday, March 10]

You will perform on the recorder the tune "Bluebird". As with all projects, successful completion and full credit depends on the level of preparation and the accuracy of presentation.

Music Project Number Four - MPIV
[Due on Thursday, April 14]

You will be asked to "hand sign" or "hand sing" [slowly] using the Kodaly/Curwen method the tune "Kookaburra" while others in the class interpret your signals and perform the tune on the recorder. As with all projects, successful completion and full credit depends on the level of preparation and the accuracy of presentation.

Final Teaching Project [FTP]

At the end of the semester, you will be asked to complete a "Final Teaching Project" [FTP]. This project will be worth one hundred and fifty (150) points.  There follows a brief description of this project, which is designed to be a "synthesis" of that which you have learned during the course of the semester. Amplification of this project will be discussed in class. As with all projects, IF THE FTP IS NOT COMPLETED ON TIME, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO KEEP IT.

Final Teaching Projects
[Due on Thursday, April 28 and Tuesday, May 3]

Develop a hypothetical lesson plan for a given grade and subject matter [i.e. 4th grade language arts, or 3rd grade science] and utilize music or a musical activity to enhance the lesson. You may choose to teach a song that enhances a particular topic [i.e. American Geography - "Fifty Nifty United States] or use instruments, movement or listening skills to enhance the given topic. You will have a chance to present the music portion of the lesson in class. It is hoped that you might also demonstrate some of the methodologies learned in class [i.e. Dalcroze, Kodaly, Suzuki or Orff] for this presentation. The purpose of this project will be for you to develop an understanding of the "literature based" or  "whole language" concept, while using your developing musical abilities and knowledges to enhance the lesson for your students.
