melody: the tune; the horizontal structure of music
subdivided into diatonic [stepwise] and intervallic [skipwise] motion

rhythm: the beat; organization of sound and silence
subdivided into duple meters [2/4, 4/4, etc] and triple meters [3/4, etc]

harmony: the chords; the vertical structure of music
subdivided into consonance [pleasing] and dissonance [jarring]
subdivided into major [happy, uplifting] and minor [sad, gloomy] modes

form: the structure of a given piece of music
