Instruments of the Orchestra

There follows a listing of the primary instruments in the orchestra by families. Also noted, are the salient characteristics of the instruments. Please familiarize yourself with this information and understand this is by no means a complete listing of all instruments.

**Good to use in Science Class when talking about sound/sound waves**

Woodwinds: 
sound produced by vibrating reed
[exception being the flute/piccolo]
single or double reed sub-categories
double reed; oboe, English Horn, bassoon
single reed; clarinet family, saxophone family

Brass:
sound produced by lips vibrating in a mouthpiece [embouchure]
cylindrical or conical sub-categories
cylindrical; trumpet family, trombone family, [euphonium/tuba]
conical; cornet; French Horn [euphonium/tuba]

Strings:
sound produced by vibrating strings being bowed or plucked
violin, viola [read alto clef] cello, string bass [double bass]

Percussion:
sound produced by something striking a membrane, bar or string tonal and non-tonal sub-categories
tonal examples-xylophone, marimba, bells, chimes, etc
non-tonal examples-snare and bass drums, cymbals, triangles, etc.
