Course Goals & Objectives The primary purpose of MUS107 Section A is to provide for students the opportunity to learn and actively listen to many types of music with a degree of appreciation and understanding. This goal will be more readily achieved as the student develops a basic understanding of the elements of music (i.e. rhythm, melody, harmony, dynamics, form, timbre, etc.) Offered will be a study of the principal stylistic periods of music, with representative composers and their music. Please note, however, the name and goal of this course is MUSIC APPRECIATION. It is not meant to be a watered-down music history course [although yes, some factual material must be mastered]. My hope is that as you graduate as a registered 8:00 Scholar - you will have broadened and enhanced your musical horizons. At the conclusion of the course, the 8:00 Scholar should be able to:
2. visually and aurally identify instruments of the orchestra 3. describe and understand the basic stylistic
characteristics 4. aurally identify music by era 5. describe and identify musical forms 6. objectively critique a musical performance 7. demonstrate a sense of reflective discrimination which gives them a basis for controlling the aesthetic quality of their musical lives and makes that quality a matter of reflective choice, not chance. 8. demonstrate a sense of the importance of the arts in general and music in particular to our lives 9. identify and understand major composers from the primary musical eras 10. identify and understand the five basic elements of music 11. demonstrate an understanding of how the arts in general and in music in particular have influenced civilization throughout the history of the world. 12. demonstrate broadened aesthetic sensitivities and perceptions 13. have an enhanced understanding of how to use "ScholarNet" 14. always answer all of the music category questions correctly on Jeopardy
