Unfortunately, there is very little we have to
work with when someone just tells us that "the Internet is slow" or "I'm having
network problems." The following are some of the questions that we ask you
to ask yourself when you experience network-related problems. It also
helps us if you provide the answers to many or most of these questions, since it
gives us the technical information we need to most expediently and efficiently
troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the problem you're experiencing.
- Is your computer or room the only one that
appears to be affected?
- Do you have up-to-date virus and adware
prevention software installed and running--can you rule out both as potential
problems?
- What type and style of computer or network
device(s) is/are involved (PC, Apple, desktop, laptop, XBox, etc.)?
- Is your computer up-to-date on its operating
system and software patches from Microsoft or Apple?
- If not wired directly to the wall jack, what
type of router or wireless device (including the SSID or network name) are you
using?
- Where are you at when the problem occurs, in
your dorm, in a common area, in the library, student center, etc.?
- During what time frame(s) did you experience
the problem?
- What software are you using that is not
operating properly (browser, email, game, etc.)?
- Are there any workarounds that you found
that actually work, such as rebooting, using another cable, wall jack, or
someone else's wireless?
