Meet the Faculty

 As of the Fall Semester, 2004, the Religion Department has five full-time faculty members.

Dr. Joe E. Lunceford is a full professor and the chair of the department. He holds the B. A. from Mississippi College, the B. D. from New Orleans Theological Seminary, and the Ph. D. (in New Testament) from Baylor University. He came to Georgetown in 1981, and teaches Greek and courses in the New Testament.

Dr. Paul L. Redditt is also a full professor, and holds the B. A. from Ouachita Baptist University, the M. Div., from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and the M. A. and Ph. D. (in Bible) from Vanderbilt University. He came to Georgetown in 1986, and teaches courses in Old Testament, New Testament, and non-Western traditions.

Dr.  Ira V. (Jack) Birdwhistell is an associate professor. He holds the B. A. from Georgetown and the M. Div. and Ph. D. (in Church History) from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He returned to Georgetown in 1980 as the campus minister and part-time instructor in Religion. He was invited to join the department as a full-time faculty member beginning with the 1997/8 academic year. He teaches courses in New Testament, Baptist studies, and church history.

Dr. Jeffrey R. Asher is an associate professor. He holds the B. A. from the University of Kentucky and the M. A. and Ph. D. (in Early Christian Literature) from the University of Chicago. He came to Georgetown in 2000, and teaches Greek and courses in the New Testament.

Dr. Sheila D. Klopfer is an assistant professor. She holds the B. A. and the M. A. from New Mexico State University, the M. A. Th. and Ph.D. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (in Church History and Theology) She came to Georgetown in 2004, and teaches New Testament, Missions, Introduction to Ministry, Women in the Christian Tradition and courses in church history.                                             E-mail: Sheila Klopfer@georgetowncollege.edu

One full-time faculty member from the Philosophy Department also teaches in the Religion Department.

Dr. Norman Wirzba is a full professor and the chair of the Philosophy Department. He holds the B. A. from the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, Canada, the M. A. from the Yale Divinity School, and the Ph. D. (in philosophy) from Loyola University (Chicago). He teaches a course in systematic theology.

The department is also fortunate to have several part-time faculty members.

Dr. Dwight Moody is the Dean of the Chapel at Georgetown. He holds the B. A. from Georgetown and the M. Div. and Ph. D. (in Systematic Theology) from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.  Dr. Moody teaches courses in New Testament and preaching; he also conducts student tours to Israel and elsewhere.

Prof. Gretchen Ziegenhals is the director of the Women's Studies Program at Georgetown. She holds the B. A. from Williams College and the M. A. from the Yale Divinity School, and has done further graduate studies at Wesleyan University. Dr. Frank Houston is the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Georgetown, Kentucky. He holds the Ph. D. from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He teaches courses on the New Testament.
