You can easily add page numbering (see also the Page Numbers Dialog Box), the current date, and other useful information in the header/footer through the buttons on the Header and Footer Toolbar. Of course, if you prefer, you can enter your own text and information.
It is important to note that these buttons do not insert text, they insert field codes, that is, special coding that allows Word to update changeable information in your document automatically. |

A header/footer is just another paragraph in your document, albeit a special one. Anything that can be done to a regular paragraph by changing the ruler settings using the Standard Toolbar and Formatting Toolbar can also be done to a header/footer. In short, you can put anything in a header or footer that you can put in a document. |
However, do not attempt to edit the text of the header/footer that has been inserted by a field code. The result may be to scramble the code and incorrect information will be inserted! |
Lastly, you can combine your own text with that entered by the field codes. |

When you click the <Insert AutoText> button, a list of choices drops down as shown on the right. Each choice is a predefined header or footer. For example, if you open the header space and then choose the [Author, Page #, Date] option from this list, the result is a one-line header in which the document author's name appears on the far left, the page number is centered, and the current date appears on the far right.
Some of the information AutoText uses is collected from the
document's Properties Dialog Box. In the example just
described, the AutoText entry inserts the Author's name. Who is
the author? Select File
Properties and select the [Summary] tab. The
author's name is that of the person to whom the program
registered.
These buttons allow you to manually insert the special, field codes. Move the mouse pointer over each button to see a brief explanation of the button. From left to right the buttons are:
