The Page Setup Dialog Box

To display this dialog box, choose

Windows (all information in one dialog box)
  • File Page Setup
    There are four tabs in this dialog box, Margins, Paper Size, Paper Source, and Layout
Macintosh (three dialog boxes)
  • Format Document
    There are two tabs in this dialog box, Margins and Layout which are the same as the tabs of the same name in the Windows dialog box referred to above
  • File Page Setup
    The various options in this dialog box are accessed by selecting choices from the dropdown list at the top left.
    • select “Page Attributes” to choose paper size, paper orientation, and scale
    • select “Microsoft Word” to:
      • set a custom page size (click on the <Custom> button)
      • access the Document Dialog Box (click on the <Margins> button)
      • print (click on the <Print> button
      • set defaults for printing (click on the <Default> button)
  • File Print
    You select the paper source in this dialog box

Page Setup Dialog Box (Mac)

Mirroring Margins

Click [Mirror Margins] if you want to print on both sides of the page

2 Pages per Sheet

Click this radio button if you want to have each physical printed page to contain two pages of your document (useful if you will be folding your paper in half to make a booklet). This is available only in Office 2000.

The [Apply To] dropdown list allows you to control what area of the document to which you want to apply the settings in this box:


Setting Defaults

ClickingDefault Buttonsaves all changes made in the Page Setup/Document Layout dialog box as the new default settings.


Options for the Layout tab

starting a new Section within your document

A document can contain multiple sections, each of which can have different page setup attributes. A new document has, by default, one section. If you insert a “Section Break” in a document, you split your document into two sections. Insert another, your document now has three sections. When you separate your document into two or more sections, use the [Section start:] dropdown list to control what happens at that section break.

Vertical Alignment of Text

The [vertical alignment] dropdown list allows you to adjust the vertical position of the text on a page:


Line Numbering On/Off

Clicking thebutton displays the Line Numbers Dialog Box. Use this box to turn line numbering on and/or to

Clicking on the <Borders> button is the same as selecting Format Borders and Shading …. By clicking this button you will access the Borders and Shading Dialog Box which is described elsewhere.
