Using HyperLinks on Slides
A hyperlink is simply text
or a graphic that you can click on when viewing a slide to make
something happen such as
- go to another slide in the current presentation
- go to another slide in a different presentation
- open another Microsoft file such as a Word document or an
Excel spreadsheet
- open another file created in a non-Microsoft
application such as AppleWorks
- open up your Web browser and display a selected web
site
Common Uses of Hyperlinks in Presentations
Create a table of contents for a presentation
Suppose your presentation contains several topical sections.
After a title slide and then one or more introductory slides, you
could create a table of contents slide with one bullet point for
each topical section. These bullet points become hyperlinks to the
first slide of each of your topical sections.
Viewing additional or supplemental data
Suppose you have a slide that contains a chart of your data.
You can place a hyperlink on that slide that, if clicked, summons
an Excel spreadsheet that contains the detailed data from which
the chart is based.
Creating a menu of presentations
Suppose you have created two or more presentations that, in a
broad sense, are logically linked. For example, perhaps you have
created three presentations that are tutorials on searching the
Internet, Getting Started Searching,
Intermediate Searching Skills, and Advanced
Searching Skills. To link these tutorials together into what
appears to be a single tutorial, you create a fourth presentation
consisting of two slides. The first slide would be a title slide
and the second is a table of contents slide that contains three
bullet points, one for each of the tutorials. The bullet points,
are of course, hyperlinks to each of the tutorial
presentations.
Creating a presentation that browses the web
Suppose you need to refer to or even use one or more web sites
during a presentation. All you need to do is create a hyperlink(s)
that contains the url to that web site(s). When the user clicks on
the hyperlink, PowerPoint opens your designated web browser to
connect to the 'Net and displays the Web page. Your PowerPoint
presentation is still open so when you quit the web browser or
minimize its window, your presentation will be visible.
