Using Other Clip Elements
The Microsoft Clip Gallery can
also be used to add other graphic elements such as pictures,
photos, sounds and videos. You can also add these elements from
files not in the clip gallery but instead stored on a disk or CD.
In either case, there is a slight difference in how this is done
depending upon the version of PowerPoint you are using.
PowerPoint 97/98
Inserting a Picture, Sound or Video Clip Using the Clip
Gallery
When you open the clip gallery as described previously
in PowerPoint 97/98, you will note that there are four tabs in the
Clip Gallery dialog box.

Pictures Tab Selected

The Pictures tab contains photographic-quality
images, the Sounds tab contains clips of recorded
sounds, and the Videos tab contains clips of digitized
video. Consequently, if you wish to add one of these clips, you
need only do the following:
- move to the slide on which you want to add a picture
- change the slide layout by choosing Format

Layout or click the Slide Layout button
on the toolbar
- since you are inserting a picture, you would select
either the Clip Art & Text or the
Text & Clip Art layouts
- choose Insert

Clip
Art or click the Insert Clip Art button
or double-click on the clipart placeholder in the slide
layout
- when the Clip Art Gallery dialog box appears, select the
appropriate tab
- Pictures for photographic-quality
images
- Sounds for clips of recorded sounds
- or Videos for clips of digitized video
- select the category of clip from the list on the left
and/or scroll through the clips using the scroll bar
- select the desired clip, then click the
<Insert> button
Inserting a Picture, Sound or Video Clip Not in the
Gallery
If you have the appropriate equipment, you can create your own
photographic-quality images, clips of recorded sounds, or clips of
digitized video. Or you may purchase a CD containing
photographic-quality images, clips of recorded sounds, or clips of
digitized video. In any case, these clips will not be contained in
the Microsoft Clip Gallery but will instead be stored on your hard
drive or on a removable disk (zip disk, superdisk, or CD) for your
created material, or on the CD you purchased. The steps to add
these clips to your presentation are:
- move to the slide on which you want to add a picture
- change the slide layout by choosing Format

on the toolbar
- since you are adding something you have created select
the layout Text & Object (or Object
& Text)
- double-click on the object placeholder Double-click
to add object
- the Insert Object dialog box will appear as
shown
- click on the Create from file radio button then
click <OK>
- a dialog box similar to the Open File dialog box will
appear
- navigate to the location of the file you want to insert,
click on it, and then click on the <Insert>
button
PowerPoint 2000/2001
Inserting a Picture Using the Clip Gallery
When you open the clip gallery as described previously
in PowerPoint 2000, you will note that only one tab appears in the 2000 Clip Gallery dialog box and that tab is labeled
Pictures. In this version of PowerPoint, clip
art pictures and photographic-quality images are located
under this single tab. The same is true for PowerPoint 2001 where the
drop-down list is labeled
All Pictures. To find the photographic-quality images
included in the Clip Gallery, scroll until you see the
Photographs category. Consequently, if you wish to add
photographic-quality images from the Clip Gallery, you need only
do the following:
- move to the slide on which you want to add a picture
- change the slide layout by choosing Format

or

on the toolbar
- since you are inserting a picture, you would select
either the Clip Art & Text or the
Text & Clip Art layouts
- double-click on the clipart placeholder in the slide
layout
- scroll through the picture categories and click on the
Photographs category
- select the desired picture and insert it
Inserting a Sound or Video Clip Using the Clip Gallery
The Microsoft Clip Gallery also has sounds and video clips but
you must follow a different set of steps then described above to
access them. The steps to add these types of clips to your
presentation are:
- move to the slide on which you want to add a picture
- change the slide layout by choosing Format

on the toolbar
- since you are adding a sound or video clip select the
layout Text & Object (or Object & Text)
- at this point, you may
- double-click on the object placeholder
Double-click to add object
- or choose Insert

- or choose Insert

from the Gallery to insert a motion clip
if you double-clicked on the object placeholder in PowerPoint 2000
- the Insert Object dialog box will appear
- NOTE: if you choose Insert


Object
in
PowerPoint 2001, the dialog box you will see is the same
- make sure the Create new radio button is
selected and then under the Object type: list
select Microsoft Clip Gallery as shown
- click

- the Microsoft Clip Gallery will appear with not only the
Pictures tab but also the Sounds and Motion Clips tabs
- use the Sounds tab to insert recorded sounds
- use the Motion Clips tab to insert animated GIFs and
digitized video
- select the appropriate tab and then find the desired sound
or motion clip
if you double-clicked on the picture placeholder in PowerPoint 2001
- find the file(s) you are seeking, select them, then click <INSERT>
if you used the Insert menu
- PowerPoint 2000: the Clip Gallery will open and either the Sound tab or the
Motion Clips tab will appear depending upon which option you
selected from the submenu
- PowerPoint 2001: the Clip Gallery will open and either [All Motion
Clips] or [All Sounds] will appear in the drop-down list depending upon which option you
selected from the submenu
- note the <Preview> check box; check it to see a
preview box to see the clip or hear the sound
- find the desired sound or motion clip and insert it
